Landmark
Dickens read here, Bowie played here, and it’s been a cinema and a roller rink in between. A very Aberdonian building, with far more going on than you’d guess from outside.
Seafront
My grandma and granda spent many evenings dancing here as their love story grew. I love its red tile roof against a bright blue sky, a gorgeous piece of Art Deco on the seafront.
Gateway
Pointed roofs, golden finials and crescent moons, like something from a storybook, with a difficult history that is an important part of their story.
University
Generations of my family are tied to King’s College, and I still slow down to take it in on my way to lectures. The crown tower takes centre stage here.
Football
My favourite painting I’ve ever made, and the most popular too: the iconic red of the Merkland Stand against Aberdeen’s dark granite. A thoughtful gift for any Dons fan or anyone with a connection to the city.
Shopfronts
A little row of shops I’ve seen almost every day of my life. Sometimes the most ordinary places become the most meaningful.
Lighthouse
Watching over Aberdeen’s coast since 1833, and a building I’d never really noticed until someone suggested I paint it. Now I look for it every time.
School
Where I first picked up a paintbrush as a pupil, and where my first ever Christmas fair set my business on its way. Coming back to paint it felt like coming full circle.
Hospital
Aberdeen’s old Royal Infirmary, painted for the cover of John Duncan’s novel The Denburn, graffiti and all. Abandoned now, but certainly not forgotten.
Fishing Village
A little world of its own at the edge of the city and the sea, with colourful sheds and doors at their most cheerful in summer.
Television
Painted for my grandma’s birthday: the old Grampian TV building where she had her first job, and found a very good source of rowies!
